Who are you, and what do you do?
Hey! I’m Hoay – illustrator, graphic designer, and art director. I currently spend most of my time designing for Bronx Narratives and contributing artist for Léte. I’m always looking forward to exploring new ideas and building with others, you can get an idea of my aesthetic and more here on Instagram.
What forms of media have influenced you the most?
Most of my influences come from early childhood movies/shows – watching movies like My Neighbor Totoro by Hayao Miyazaki, Hey Arnold! and other great animated shows of the time gave me a sense of direction and acted as a catalyst for my imagination and how far it will go. Listening to music from Kanye, Drake, Gorillaz, or N*E*R*D have taught me to be creative, push the boundaries, don’t let people tell you anything, and put your best into whatever you’re doing, while knowing there’s always room to grow.
What hardware / software do you use?
Mainly 3 things: iMac, MacBook Pro and Samsung Galaxy Tablet. I’m pretty good with Photoshop and the Adobe Suite but my heart lies with Illustrator.
What would be your dream creative setup?
It varies. There are days where you need to be alone – almost in this fortress of solitude – but there are also times I like being around other people. It’s good to be in a healthy place mentally where you can talk and vibe off of others positivity. It definitely makes me happier about the creative process.
Ultimately an environment where I have my own space to breathe but close enough to be around people who innovate me. Haha, and of course I have to add food and beverages to that – food is fuel!
