Who are you, and what do you do?
My name is Jensen Karp and I own art galleries here in LA, but also write comedy. It’s a weird pairing, but I’m a weird guy. As a teenager I was signed as a rapper to Interscope Records, and currently manage a female rapper I first saw on YouTube, who is also signed, but to Island Records. I wear many hats, but the good news is – I love those hats.
What forms of media have influenced you the most?
I think movies have always been the most important source of influence for me. Growing up, I tried to rent every video I could get my hands on, spending most of my weekends at home, making sure I had seen every Scorsese flick or anything the Coen Brothers touched. It helped me as a storyteller and also aesthetically when it comes to art. It shaped my tastes more than anything else I consumed.
What hardware / software do you use?
I’m always on my MacBook Air, which is my home base for everything I write – mostly in Word. Every once in a while I’ll find myself on Final Draft, but I’m not real tech savvy or anything. Just need somewhere to type words into.
What would be your dream creative setup?
I really enjoy silence when working. I always go out of my way, even in my current modern house, to have a comfy, fluffy couch. I think everything comes down to your couch. When I work in an office, I have to find silence to do my best work. Also, I need a space where I can get up, walk and see some new scenery. I also would love my dog and cat to be there, but we can negotiate that.
